You can find all of the details about using StackShot with Zerene on the Zerene website. Zerene Stacker - Auto-aligns the source images. Nikon users will have the capability to review focus in this manner but will have to turn off live view for the actual stack. You will need to make certain the live view images are visible on both the camera and the computer, or the camera will ignore the shutter pulses from StackShot. This gives you the ability to have the live view images displayed on the computer while stacking. If you are shooting with a Canon camera that is Live View capable you can connect another cable from your camera to the computer. The shutter Interface cable is also required if you want to use StackShot without a computer. This method has the advantage of being compatible with many more cameras, but has the disadvantage of requiring a shutter interface cable. When the Zerene Software needs to activate the camera shutter it sends a USB command to StackShot to assert the shutter output, just as if you pushed the shutter button on the StackShot controller. The camera is then controlled with a shutter interface cable to StackShot. ![]() But if you find that I have misstated anything, please let me know because I try hard to stay objectively accurate. When using Zerene Stacker, the StackShot controller is connected to the computer with a standard USB cable. Some people have both and use whichever is more appropriate for the task at hand.įull disclosure: I wrote Zerene Stacker so you should be suspicious of everything I say about the comparison. People with other priorities very reasonably prefer Helicon Focus. Most of my stacks are deep and I make stereo from almost everything, so for me the choice is simple in favor of ZS. Both programs can generate 3D stereo pairs from a single stack, but the approaches are very different so that the ZS result is much more accurate with difficult geometries such as bristly bugs. Zerene Stacker adds a feature called "slabbing", which facilitates retouching with deep stacks ("deep" = lots of source images). Helicon Focus does all of what many people care about, and it runs very fast. The choice of Zerene Stacker versus Helicon Focus depends on what you care about. This approach runs very fast, partly because it skips most of the raw conversion work for the source images, and partly because HF in general is much faster than Zerene Stacker. Then HF stacks the RGB TIFF images and finally packages the resulting image into a DNG wrapper so that it can be color-adjusted exactly as if it were an original raw image. The end results from either programme will be indistinguishable but their interfaces and workflow are different. ![]() Both do a very good job of stacking and offer the ability to edit the stacked images to correct any small stacking errors. In the background, HF does minimal processing to convert the raw images to 16-bit TIFF with RGB at each pixel position ("demosaiced") but otherwise with no adjustments. There are two major specialist stacking programs, Zerene Stacker and Helicon Focus. In this case the stacking program (HF) is fed unprocessed raw images. Helicon Focus allows another option, which they call Raw-In-DNG-out. This approach is relatively slow because the raw-to-TIFF conversion step does a lot of work on every image separately, but I think it makes the best final output. ![]() ![]() As part of adjusting the image, I also tune noise reduction and sharpening so as to provide the stacking program with images that let it make the best decisions. So I do what you suggest: using Lightroom, I adjust one image, synchronize those settings to the other images, then export to 16-bit TIFF to feed into the stacking program. I prefer to feed the stacking program with images that are close to what I finally want to see in the end. Different people have different approaches.
